Spring has sprung and that means allergy season is officially here.  Allergy sufferers are reporting itchy watery eyes, sneezing and other symptoms as pollen and mold fill the air.

If you or someone you love is an allergy sufferer, you probably wonder if an air purifier is worth the investment.  Will it help?  Could it hurt?

The experts at Midwest Allergy are available to talk about air purifiers and what they can – and can’t do – for allergy sufferers.

Read on to learn more about air purifiers:

For those with pollen and outdoor mold allergies, the search for relief begins when winter ends.  Typically, an air purifier isn’t the first line of defense.  First and foremost, keep your windows closed with the air conditioning running to prevent outdoor allergens from entering your home.  If your symptoms persist, a variety of allergy medications are available to minimize symptoms and misery.  Immunotherapy (allergy shots) is the only disease modifying therapy available.

An air purifier is certainly something to consider, but unless you’ve addressed the source of allergens, the benefit might be minimal.

An air purifier can’t really hurt you – except in your pocketbook.  Some products can be pricey!  Shop around because the market is very competitive, and look for devices with HEPA filters.

Keep in mind that people experience mixed results:  some like them, some love them, and some don’t notice a difference.

If you have exhausted methods to reduce allergens in your home and you have consulted with your allergist, it probably won’t hurt to try an air purifier.
