Food can be one of the more enjoyable components of family gatherings, holidays, and celebrations.  However, for those with life-threatening food allergies, these situations can cause extreme anxiety. Sadly, anxiety and food allergies can go hand-in-hand.

There are, however, ways to cope.  If you or someone you love has a food allergy, you probably take precautions, and have a plan in place should a reaction occur.  But do you have coping skills for the anxiety associated with food allergies?

Learning to cope with anxiety and food allergies can be done.

If you avoid holidays, birthday celebrations or other gatherings because of fear of food reactions, you might benefit from various coping methods.  The bottom line is, you are not alone and there is help available for those coping with anxiety and food allergies. Read on:

Support groups

Either online or in person, a strong support group can be a big help for those who suffer from life-threatening food allergies.  Knowing you aren’t alone, and building a bond with like-minded families can be beneficial and rewarding.

Have a plan

Sometimes the best way to deal with anxiety is to work through the possible scenarios and have a plan in place.  Preparing a detailed food allergy action plan – and sharing it with school officials, day care providers, coworkers, and family and friends – will increase confidence and decrease anxiety.

Seek help

Sometimes patients need professional help.  If you think your anxiety related to food allergies is adversely affecting your quality of life, help is available.  There are therapists and other healthcare professionals who specialize in this area.
