If you or someone you love has food allergies, you know that eating out can be a stressful experience. Enter chef cards: A way to communicate with wait staff and cooks about your food allergies so you can eat safely in restaurants.

So what are chef cards? They can be whatever you want them to be, but generally they are business card sized and contain information about your food allergies. They can be laminated or not; some people make multiple copies and hand them out in restaurants.

They can be a useful tool when you eat out with food allergies, especially if you travel a lot or are on vacation in a new place.

If you are considering having chef cards made for yourself or a loved one, here are some reasons to do so. Read on:

Convenience

Repeating your food allergies to each member of the staff — management, servers and chefs – can be tiresome. Handing over a card opens a dialog and allows people to read about your food restrictions, meaning the information might be better absorbed – and not translated incorrectly by a server to a chef.

Comfort level

Knowing you did your best to communicate your food allergies to a restaurant’s staff can increase your comfort level while dining out. By handing out chef cards, you are clearly communicating in a tangible way.

Increased visibility

Paper chef cards can be clipped to your order, meaning the chef can clearly see your restrictions AS HE/SHE prepares your meal. That added level of protection is good for you – and the restaurant.
