While spring allergies get a lot of headlines – who hasn’t heard of the pollen explosion? – fall allergies can be just as miserable.

With fall just around the corner, you are probably wondering what to look for so you can head off any allergies before they start. We don’t blame you. Fall allergies can be rough and miserable to deal with — especially since there are things you can do now to help!

The medical experts at Midwest Allergy are here to help. We’re sharing ways to head off fall allergies before they start. Read on:

Ragweed

This yellow plant can cause big problems for allergy sufferers. It blooms in August and can cause issues until your area gets a hard frost. So what can you do? Keep an eye on the local allergy report and pollen counts. Avoid going out until after early afternoon and use your air conditioner to keep ragweed out of your home. Don’t wear shoes in your home, either.

Mold and Dust

With the cooler weather brings more time spent inside and that means if your home has mold and dust (and what home doesn’t) your fall allergies could flare up. So what can you do? Run a dehumidifier in your basement and don’t forget to remove dead leaves and lawn debris from your yard. For dust, one of the best things you can do is have your home’s air vents cleaned and change the filters in your furnace.

See your allergist

One of the best ways to prevent – or manage – fall allergies is with medication. Also, your allergist might suggest immunotherapy to keep them in check. By making an appointment now, you could save yourself the pain of fall allergies.
