The cold weather and lack of pollen means you don’t have to fight your winter allergies, right? Wrong!

Winter can bring up a whole new set of allergies for you to deal with and it can be frustrating and challenging. Indoor allergens like mold, animal dander and dust mites can make you have winter allergies.

Being shut indoors due to cold temperatures and having viruses can wreak havoc on your allergies and breathing. So what can you do? Here are four ways you can combat winter allergies. Read on!

Filtration and humidification

One thing you can do to fight winter allergies is control the air in your home. Keeping the air properly humidified can help offset the misery of allergy symptoms by keeping your nasal passages moist. It can also help prevent irritation.

Also, using a HEPA filter can help your winter allergies by eliminating the particles that irritate you.

If you can’t have a whole-house system for humidity or filtration, put portable units in your bedroom.

Keep it clean

Keeping your home dusted and vacuumed can help cut winter allergy symptoms by removing them from your living space. Also, if you have a pet, keep him or her groomed to cut down on dander and shedding. Keep your bedding washed as well.

Make sure it’s not a cold

If you have fatigue, a runny nose, a cough – or other symptoms – make sure you aren’t sick. How to tell? With allergies, you generally have itchy eyes and a tickle in your throat. With a virus, you usually have a fever or body aches. Best bet? Call your doctor or allergist!
