histIn recent years, there has been more and more talk about oral allergy syndrome. This condition can be mild or severe, and it can cause discomfort and irritation.

What exactly is oral allergy syndrome? Basically, it’s a mild food allergy that can cause an itching, burning or tingling feeling in or around your mouth when you eat raw fruits or vegetables. Generally, those with seasonal allergies can develop it and it can come out of nowhere – with reactions coming from foods you’ve eaten with no issues for years.

Oral allergy syndrome is found in folks who are allergic to plant pollen – which makes sense, as many fruits and vegetables have some of those characteristics. That’s something called “cross reactivity,” meaning your immune system thinks the two are the same and reacts the same.

How do you test for it? It can be difficult. Tests that can reveal other food allergies (blood and skin tests) often come back negative for sufferers of oral allergy syndrome.

This condition can be managed, however. Cooking the offending fruits and vegetables can help because it breaks down the proteins that cause the reaction. There’s also strict avoidance of the foods that cause you issues.

Antihistamines can help relieve minor symptoms and also, many oral allergy syndrome sufferers find they can eat the foods that cause them issue when it’s not a highly allergic time of year like spring or fall. Allergy shots can also help lessen or relieve this condition.
In rare occasions, sufferers can have a more severe reaction. Also, some people have oral allergy syndrome to nuts, which can be worse. You should call your allergist if you suspect this is the case.
