When you or someone you love has a life-threatening food allergy, grocery shopping or eating at a restaurant can be tricky – and scary. While reading labels and asking questions is good, sometimes, nuts can be included in foods you might not expect.

From lunch meat, to salsa, to gluten-free foods, nuts can be in places you might not expect. If your family deals with food allergies, you likely know restaurants and foods you can’t have. Thai and Chinese food? Probably risky (all that cashew chicken!). Ice cream parlors? Nuts galore!

But there are also nuts in some not-so-obvious places, so if you or someone you love has a life-threatening food allergy, read on to learn more.

Deli meat

Nuts in meat? It’s true. Some types of deli meat, like mortadella, can have pistachio inside. This can be problematic if you purchase meat with nuts in it or the meat you purchase was sliced on the same machine at the deli.

Chili/salsa/sauces

One might think that Mexican or Indian cuisine is pretty safe. But nuts like cashews can be used to thicken sauces in Indian foods and some restaurants use peanut butter to thicken chili, salsas and mole sauce.

Gluten-free foods

While gluten-free foods can be a great thing for those with gluten allergies, people with life-threatening food allergies to nuts might be at risk. Almond flour – or other nut flours – can be used, as can lupin, a legume flour that some folks with tree nut and peanut allergies are allergic to. And often, gluten-free foods can be made with nut butters or nut milks.
