The cold and flu season is in full swing, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend 2017 dealing with illness after illness. These simple winter health tips can help keep you and your family happy and germ-free this year.

Don’t touch your face

Like most winter health tips, this can seem deceptively simple. But training yourself not to touch your face – not an eye rub or a nose scratch! – you can help cut your risk of getting sick, as most germs are spread this way. It’s also a good idea to avoid touching communal objects (like a pen or shopping cart handle) if you can.

Get a flu shot

Yup, that’s right. While some years are better than others in terms of a match, getting a flu shot can keep you healthy. Don’t forget to get one! Many people skip flu shots but we don’t recommend it.

Sleep

One of the best ways to stay healthy is to be well-rested, so make sure you are getting enough ZZZ’s! What’s the right number of hours? It really depends, but try turning in a half-hour or hour earlier for a week and see how you feel.

Exercise

Studies have shown that exercise can help boost immunity and a stronger immune system means fewer illnesses. So hop on the treadmill, check out a yoga class or pump some iron. Your body will thank you!

Wash your hands

OK, so everyone knows this one but you’d be amazed at the number of people who don’t wash their hands frequently during the day. If you can’t get to a sink, carry a bottle of hand sanitizer. And encourage your kids to have healthy hand hygiene habits, too!

Midwest Allergy

We want you to have a healthy and happy 2017. If you need help managing an allergy or asthma, give us a call for an appointment with one of our top docs!
