It’s almost World Allergy Week and for those who suffer from allergies, this is time to learn and share.

World Allergy Week has been in existence since 2011 and is an annual initiative of the World Allergy Organization. The goal is to raise awareness of allergies – and related disorders. It’s also about advocacy.

Allergies and related diseases like asthma are on the rise globally. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 30% of adults and 40% of kids have some type of allergy. Asthma, a related condition, is the fifth leading chronic disease in America.

Globally, 220-250 million people may suffer from allergies, according to the World Allergy Organization.

Allergies can affect a person’s quality of life and food allergies can even be life-threatening.

In 10 years, no country has reported a decline in food allergies.

The World Allergy Organization started World Allergy Week to raise awareness and to bring people together – doctors, patients, policy makers and the public. There are events scheduled during World Allergy Week (April 2-8, 2017).

If you or a loved one has allergies, you might be wondering how you can get involved and raise awareness. According to the World Allergy Organization, they receive stories, audio and video recordings, pictures and press releases about local activities and programs.

Also, this year’s theme is “The Agony of Hives,” and there is a webinar to learn more.

Whether you or a loved one has food allergies, environmental allergies, asthma or something else, World Allergy Week is a chance to learn and raise awareness of these serious conditions.
