It’s a new year and that means one thing: It’s time to make resolutions! For allergy families, this might mean something different. What allergy family resolutions might you make this year?
If you or a loved one deals with allergies, making allergy family resolutions can help you in many ways. Goal setting and planning are good things to think about when making allergy family resolutions in 2018 and they can help keep you healthy and safe.
So what allergy family resolutions should you make in 2018? Read on:

Medical action plan

If you or a loved one has a severe allergy, working with your allergist to set up a medical action plan is one thing to do in 2018. A medical action plan is a series of steps and actions to take if someone has a serious condition and their health declines. It can help ensure your loved one’s safety in a crisis situation like a reaction. Having a medical action plan, and knowing what to do in an emergency is peace of mind.

Spread the word

Resolve in 2018 to educate friends and family about allergies. The fact is, most people who don’t live with allergies simply don’t understand. This year, try to reach out and explain what it’s like to live with allergies. You can talk to a friend, write a social media post or even speak at your child’s school. Think outside the box and spread the word!

Organize and label medicine

For those of us with allergies, our medicine cabinets are likely full. This year, work to organize and label your medicines – especially your epinephrine! – and keep it in a clear and central location.

Get support

Living with allergies can be lonely, so make this the year you reach out for support. There are online communities and local meetups. There are walks and advocacy events. Step outside your comfort zone and meet some allergy moms (and dads!).

Look for ways to increase safety

Sometimes, as allergy families, we can go a while without a reaction and perhaps lose focus. This year, make a new resolution to always wear your medical alert bracelet, carry your epinephrine, read EVERY label EVERY time and speak up at potlucks, parties and restaurants.
